Renewable Rejection Database

Management theorist W. Edwards Deming famously said, “In God we trust. All others must bring data.” I created this database to provide reliable data on the rejections or restrictions of battery, solar, and wind projects that have occurred around the world over the past two decades. If you are aware of a rejection or restriction that's not in the database, please click the Contribute button and complete the form. Please include a working URL to the relevant article or government entity so I can verify the information. If it checks out, I will add it to the database. Thanks.

The “Earraghail Renewable Energy Development” proposed by ScottishPower Renewables was refused by the Energy Consents Unit of the Scottish Government on February 14, 2025. The initial application was submitted in February 2022. The project was for 13 6-MW wind turbines (total maximum capacity of 78 MW), a photovoltaic array of 5 MW, and battery storage of 25 MW spread over 2,430 hectares (6,000 acres) of the Kintyre Peninsula between the villages of Tarbert and Skipness.

The Cass County Board voted to deny a permit for NextEra Energy’s proposed $400 million commercial solar system west of Murray. The process for the 1.5 megawatt solar farm began four years ago prompting the county to declare a moratorium on solar permits. The county set new zoning regulations in April of 2023 and NextEra went through the public hearing process on its use of up to 2,000 acres of leased farmland. Project Manager Matt Jones said the county may need more time before taking the vote because commissioners Terry Dasher and Dan Stohlmann were new to the board. The county attorney will draft a resolution declaring the county has made a specific finding regarding the conditional use permit. The county planning commission recommended denial of the permit in October.

The New Hartford town board denied a potential solar project on Chapman Road after receiving negative feedback from the public. Residents listened to the C.T. Male Associates plans for the solar project. The development company wanted to build the solar farm across 23 acres...Paul Miscione listened to their concerns, then asked for a vote from meeting attendees on whether they wanted to go forward with the project. The vote came out to 125 opposed and 2 approvals. At that moment, the board denied any further development at that location. Miscione said, "Feedback is key for us. We are here to give the residents what they want in their neighborhoods."

Plans to build a battery energy storage site near a busy residential area have been rejected over safety concerns. Somerset Council refused Trina Solar UK HoldCo's application to build the facility on land north of Styles Close in Frome, next to an existing substation. The move follows residents campaigning against the proposals, claiming they posed a "fire risk and put those living in neighbouring properties in jeopardy".Councillor Helen Kay told a planning meeting on Tuesday: "The consequences of this going wrong are very high." Battery storage systems use batteries to store electricity generated at times of low demand, with the operators selling the energy back to the National Grid at peak times.

In Willingham by Stow, the tiny one-pub village has found itself at the centre of a net zero planning row that could come to be repeated across the country.Targeted as the potential site for a giant battery park, [Ed. note, it was 400 MW] locals have fought back against the developers – and won what some see as a famous victory. Last week West Lindsey District Council planners agreed that the batteries would make their bucolic woods and fields “look like Immingham Docks”, a reference to the nearby port which is the UK’s largest by tonnage. Councillors have rejected the scheme.

The Henry County Board of Supervisors voted to extend its moratorium on wind energy projects until Sept. 2, citing the need for more time to refine regulations. The decision, made during the board’s meeting on Jan. 30, follows more than a year of debate over how to regulate wind energy developments in the county. The initial resolution establishing a temporary moratorium on the rezoning of land to the Alternative Energy Overlay District for commercial use until March 2, 2025 was approved by the board April 2, 2024 with an option for supervisors to either extend it or terminate it early.

A zoning application for a proposed Beaver County solar farm was denied in North Sewickley Township, Thursday. The farm would be built on roughly eighty acres of wooded area. The company leasing the land, Penn Renewables, made its case in front of the zoning board and members of the public. It had to show “minimal impact” to the community. Neighbors argued it would have a major impact, citing concerns with flooding and property values. Others told the board this would be the first step in altering the rural lifestyle they’ve chosen as residents. “There’s no good in this whatsoever,” Tina Pflugh said. She owns Milk House Meats and her farmland is adjacent to the proposed solar site along Collins Road. “It’s going to depreciate the property value. We have nothing to gain.”

Morro Bay’s city council unanimously passed an ordinance banning large battery-energy storage facilities for at least 45 days, with plans to extend it until 2027. The decision follows growing concerns about safety, especially after a fire at Vistra’s Moss Landing plant released potentially toxic smoke and led to evacuations.

A sudden decision by Queensland’s new LNP government to pause approvals for four major onshore wind farm projects has cast doubt over plans for energy users, including big miners Rio Tinto and BHP, to electrify operations and help meet emission reduction targets.Premier David Crisafulli has said he will stick to the previous Labor government’s target of net zero emissions by 2050 but will repeal its renewable energy target and has committed maintenance funds to support the indefinite operation of state-owned coal power stations.

1/21/2025USOologah, OKbattery

Oologah residents charged up about a proposed lithium-ion battery storage facility have gotten their wish for the land it would sit on to be denied rezoning. The electricity from opposition was again felt on Jan. 21 for the city planning commission meeting, which was moved to the Oolagah Community Center due to the expected crowd. The facility would be remote-operated and based on a plot of land next to Fourmile Creek - largely in a floodplain- across Highway 169 from a PSO powerplant. The board listened to property owner Matthew Hinson address negative reviews and questions about the planned site, which he and Black Mountain Energy Storage said would contribute millions to the city's resources, as well as Oologah-Talala Public Schools. All residents who signed up to speak afterward, however, expressed skepticism and persisting opposition to the project...The vocal majority of those in attendance got their wish, and the rezoning was denied - effectively killing the facility's construction.
