Renewable Rejection Database

Management theorist W. Edwards Deming famously said, “In God we trust. All others must bring data.” I created this database to provide reliable data on the rejections or restrictions of battery, solar, and wind projects that have occurred around the world over the past two decades. If you are aware of a rejection or restriction that's not in the database, please click the Contribute button and complete the form. Please include a working URL to the relevant article or government entity so I can verify the information. If it checks out, I will add it to the database. Thanks.

Many Venango Township residents are breathing a sigh of relief after supervisors unanimously rejected a proposed project they feared would redefine their community. That project was a 900-acre, 80 mega-watt solar farm that would include about 300,000 solar panels in Wattsburg. “I’ve heard it referred to as a six-month nightmare, but we needed that time for them to become educated about the process and to come together as a community. Ultimately, we got the outcome that we wanted,” said Bruce Whitehair, Venango Township resident. Throughout those six months, township supervisors have known where the community has stood. Around 300 signs saying “no solar farm” were put up throughout the township by taxpayers.

A wind farm situated at what has been described as a "gateway to Scotland" has been refused. Community Windpower wanted to build 45 turbines along the A7 corridor between Langholm and Teviothead in Dumfries and Galloway and the Borders. The final decision on the Faw Side project lay with the Scottish government following a public inquiry. It has now ruled the scheme should not go ahead due to its "significant" landscape and visual impact. There were also concerns about the effect on the nearby Eskdalemuir Seismic Array which is used to detect any vibrations caused by nuclear tests.

The Benton County Planning Board on Wednesday night denied a plan for a battery energy storage facility near Gravette, but did approve a similar facility to be built near Siloam Springs. The vote was 6-1 against the Gravette proposal. Most of the six board members who voted against it said they did so because of the proposed project's proximity to residential areas. Ashley Tucker was the lone board member who voted to approve the proposal. He said he did not see the proposal being any different from if the board were voting to put a petroleum business at a similar location. Some audience members booed when he announced his vote.

A proposed solar farm off Route 25 near Charge Pond Road was denied site plan review approval at a Planning Board meeting on Monday, Dec. 18. This decision stops development on the project, barring a potential legal challenge or appeal to the board's decision. The planning board denied the project primarily based on its lack of compliance with a required 75-foot setback. Members of the board also expressed concerns that the project might contaminate the groundwater and the aquifer near the site.

The Will County Board voted Thursday to reject plans for a solar energy facility in Green Garden Township after residents and local officials said the proposal was too close to homes and did not fit with their plans. Surya Powered LLC, through its affiliate Kuse Solar Farm LLC, wanted to build a 5-megawatt commercial solar energy facility on about 40 acres of vacant property on the west side of South 104th Avenue near Kuse Road in Green Garden Township, within about 3/4 mile from the village of Frankfort’s boundaries. The entire parcel is 71.64 acres and zoned for agriculture use.

The Osage Nation won a massive ruling in Tulsa federal court on Wednesday that requires Enel to dismantle a 150-megawatt wind project it built in Osage County despite the tribe’s repeated objections. The tribe’s fight against Rome-based Enel began in 2011 and is the longest-running legal battle over wind energy in American history. As reported by Curtis Killman in the Tulsa World on Thursday, the ruling grants the United States, the Osage Nation, and Osage Minerals Council permanent injunctive relief via “ejectment of the wind turbine farm for continuing trespass.” The decision by U.S. Court of International Trade Judge Jennifer Choe-Graves is the culmination of 12 years of litigation that pitted the tribe and federal authorities against Enel

A windfarm in southern France has been ordered to close due to noise complaints from residents and the effect it is having on birds, in the first closure of its kind in the country. The managing company of the site - Énergie Renouvelable du Languedoc, a subsidiary of the German group EnW - now has 15 months to dismantle the turbines and close the Bernargues windfarm in Lunas (Hérault, Occitanie), the Nîmes Court of Appeal ruled on Friday, December 8. The company must return the land to its original state. If it misses the deadline, it will be subject to a fine of €3,000 per day for 180 days, for every day it is late

The supervisors voted unanimously to reject a solar project proposed by RWE covering 1,270 acres. The minutes of the meeting state, "On October 26, 2023 the Planning Commission determined that the proposed facility is not in substantial accord for the following reason: It does not adhere to the general guidance of the Comprehensive Plan including the Solar Energy Facility Siting Policy, specifically: to avoid the Prince George Planning Area."

South Frontenac Council voted against supporting Alectra-Convergent Power’s battery storage facility proposal, with a 4-4 tie broken by the mayor’s deciding vote against it. While the township’s staff report acknowledged that battery storage projects are generally appropriate for the area and outlined necessary infrastructure and safety measures, concerns over fire risks, rushed decision-making, and unclear community benefits influenced council members' opposition. Fire safety was a key issue, with local firefighters requiring a tailored emergency response plan. The proposal did not require zoning amendments but would need site plan controls. Despite some municipalities supporting similar projects, South Frontenac decisively rejected this one, leaving Alectra-Convergent to submit its application to Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator without municipal backing.
